In addition to the regular reading, math, writing and social studies curriculum, Lewis Elkin Elementary School provides many academic specialist areas to help expose students to many opportunities of interest. Each special has it’s own space within the building where students meet at least once per week with a specialist teacher that is certified and highly qualified and experienced in that particular area. Education has benefited from the inclusion of technology and computers by making it easier for students to keep up while helping teachers by improving the way lessons can be planned and taught. Students who use computers learn to use word processors for work, and subsequently they learn computer jargon and strengthen grammatical skills. Computers make the learning process a lot more simple and efficient, giving students access to tools and methods of communication unavailable offline. As the Internet has grown, so too has the available research options. Teaching students how to use computers helps them prepare for any number of possible careers. Elkin’s Computer Lab, ran by Mark Kasner teaches students various web based academic programs, robotics, computer programming and numerous software applications including Google apps in order to become 21st century learners.

High quality physical education can encourage young people to develop knowledge, understanding and skills across a range of physical education, sport and health – enhancing experiences. More than that, it can develop in them the desire and commitment to continue to enjoy, improve and achieve in line with their own personal capacities throughout their lifetime. Elkin’s Gymnasium ran by Bryan Bendowski incorporate physical activities and health education rolled up in one fun experience.
Our well equipped Music Room
A Music Education program provides an aesthetic experience for its students. Often times, students will utilize music as an outlet for expression that is sometimes unavailable to them in other academic areas. Musical experiences will provide the students with opportunities for emotional response, which often encourages the cognitive processes. Music Education instills “life values” in students. Some of these include; discipline, cooperation, social skills, and building good character. Knowledge of music technology, music history, music theory, and music culture will reinforce knowledge in other academic subjects as well. Eric Ahern teaches music and will often create a sense of school spirit, which will in turn provide the students with a sense of self-worth which will almost always reflect a positive attitude.
